Fees on checked luggage and now pillows and blankets are common place as airlines seek to increase revenues during a travel downturn caused by the recession.

Selling the pillows and blankets “is a natural extension of our ‘pay for what you choose and use’ model we began rolling out last year.” Says Kevin Jackson, an official US Airways,

US Airways claims the sleep kit is an affordable way for US Airways passengers to increase their flying comfort.

According to USA Today;  In the past year, US Airways has started charging for checked bags, soft drinks, bottled water and select coach seats.

In the last three months of 2008, the fees brought in $100 million in revenue, the airline disclosed last week. The expected total for 2009: $400 million to $500 million.

Airline Fees continue to frustrate passengers says new consumer group.

“Passenger frustrations have been compounded by lost luggage, as well as new surcharges for everything including fuel, beverages, pillows, baggage, and certain coach-class seating.” says the group  Association for Airline Passenger Rights.

According to a recent press release …The Association for Airline Passenger Rights (AAPR) has been formed to change the nature of domestic air travel by improving customer service and pursuing a federal Passenger Bill of Rights in Congress.

Consumers can easily compare charges for extra airline services at compare airline fees.

According to the AAPR web site:

Airline Satisfaction Is Lowest Since 2001

According to the American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), a polling organization that rates over forty-three businesses in ten sectors based on in-depth interviewing and computer-based extrapolation of its results, the Big Six legacy airlines (full-service providers with national or international flight routes) rate the lowest of all sixteen industries surveyed in the first quarter of 2008. Only Southwest Airlines, a leader in consumer satisfaction for fifteen years, garnered anything approaching an acceptable score at 79 out of a possible 100.

In descending order, ACSI scores the airlines as follows:

  • Southwest Airlines, 79 (3.9 point increase over 2007)
  • American Airlines, 62 (3.3 point increase)
  • Continental Airlines, 62 (10.1 point decline)
  • Delta Air Lines, 60 (1.7 point increase)
  • Northwest Airlines, 57 (6.6 point decline)
  • United Airlines, 56 (unchanged)
  • US Airways, 54 (11.5 point decline)

Airline Fees in Focus: It can be difficult to identify which airlines offer the best value when it comes to airline fees.

Which airlines offer the best value when it comes to airline fees?

Airlines began to institute additional and extra airline fees in ‘07 and ‘08 when fuel prices were sky high. Now that fuel prices have declined,

Airlines have decided for the most part to leave extra airline fees where they are.

Consumers are challenged to find the best airfare value, which means finding the best total cost of published airfares plus additional extra airline fees like the charge for a first piece of checked luggage. Checked luggage fees can effect more than 50% of all travelers (business travelers often carry-on only).

Consumers must look at what airlines charge for luggage fees, in-flight services such as food, ticket change fees, pet fees and over 25 extra fees charged by airlines in addition to the ticket fee.

It can be difficult to identify which airlines offer the best value when it comes to airline fees.

You need to take into consideration over 40 common extra airline fees charged by Airlines in addition to the airfare.

Airline Fees typically come in five types.
• Luggage Fees
• In-flight Service Fees
• Seating & Other Fees
• Ticket Fees
• Frequent Flier Fees
